Liviu Rebreanu was born in Transylvania on November 27, 1885, to parents that, like him, were the children of peasants. Growing up in a poor family definitely had an impact on his views of his world, and are seen in his reflections of them in his writing. At the age of 23, after attending military school and then military academy, he illegally crossed the border in to Romania, where he resided in Bucharest. A year later he was arrested and extradited to Transylvania, where, upon his release from custody, he returned to his home in Romania where he lived until his untimely death in 1944.
