The Written Works of Liviu Rebreanu

The written works of Liviu Rebreanu are numerous. Any avid fan of this Romanian writer of novels, short stories, plays and journals can no doubt recognize this short list of works. Known for writing novels and plays that mirrored social issues of the times, Rebreanu takes readers back to the early 20th century.

"Cadrilul" (1919)

This first play written by Rebreanu in 1919 is the first record of his published work. Translated to English, the title means "The Quadrille," and it is a comedy in four acts. Also in this year, he released a collection of short stories called "Framântari."

"Ion" (1920)

His first published novel, "Ion," brought him into the eye of the Romanian Academy, much to the pleasure of his actress wife, Fanny Radulescu. A book focusing on social issues arising before the war in Transylvania among the peasants and intellectuals, it is a heart-rending story of failed and misplaced love and marriage. Rife with murder, suicide and drama, it is an amazingly modern book even though it is almost 100 years old.

"Cuibul Visurilor" (1927)

This short story, which translates to "The Nest of Dreams" in English, is one of Rebreanu's most loved stories. It is only a few pages long. Written in Romanian, this story is often difficult to find in English. If you find a copy, it is wise to hold on to it.

Liviu Rebreanu was a renown author, playwright and journalist. Any fan of Romanian literature is sure to enjoy his comedic routines and attachment to serious social issues. At the time of his death in 1944, Rebreanu would have scoffed if he knew how famous he would become.
